PHOENIX — A convicted felon has pleaded not guilty to charges that he
allegedly shot and wounded a Phoenix police officer earlier this month.
Court records show Brandon McCabe entered his plea during his arraignment
Wednesday. He’s being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder,
misconduct involving weapons, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.
McCabe is accused of shooting Officer Peter “Chris” Bennett six times on the
night of Jan. 6. Bennett, 36, is recovering from surgery
to his face, right arm and right hip.
Police said Bennett approached McCabe in an area with a high burglary rate. They
said McCabe ignored the officer’s command and the two exchanged gunfire.
McCabe was arrested after being found hiding in a shed. He had gunshot wounds
to both hands.
