Pedal on: Arizona gets nod for first bike route across state

PHOENIX — Bicyclists will soon be able to ride across Arizona from border to border without leaving a designated path, the Arizona Department of Transportation said Thursday.
The state received approval to build U.S. Bicycle Route 90 that will become part of a national network. Arizona’s 573-mile route starts at the Arizona-California border and follows Interstate 10 through Phoenix and Tucson before ending at the New Mexico state line on State Route 80.
Cyclists will be taken through Bisbee, Tombstone, Saguaro National Park and other scenic areas.
Michael Sanders, ADOT’s bicycle and pedestrian program coordinator, said in a press release the new route should attract cycling enthusiasts from all over the world.
“This route directs bicyclists along a combination of comfortable bikeways through a scenic Arizona landscape,” he said.
The route will not require any new infrastructure, as it will follow existing highways, streets and paths.
