Medical assistant sentenced for prescription drug fraud

PHOENIX — A northern Arizona woman who worked as a medical assistant has
been sentenced to three years in prison in a prescription drug fraud case.

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday that Jodie
Leanne Cox, 33, was sentenced on five counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices.

Cox is from the Dewey-Humboldt area. She originally was charged by the Yavapai
County Attorney’s Office in a 134-count indictment.

Prosecutors said Cox illegally obtained approximately 15,000 hydrocodone pills
from August 2009 to April 2011.

They said Cox used her knowledge as a medical assistant to fill more than 100
false prescriptions in her name and the names of her family members at various
pharmacies in Yavapai and Maricopa counties.

Authorities said the prescriptions didn’t have a doctor’s authorization.
