Man accused of trying smuggle marijuana into Arizona

DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Federal authorities say a Mexican man has been arrested
for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 100 pounds of marijuana into southern
Arizona.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection identify the man as 18-year-old Roberto
Acosta-Alvarado of Agua Prieta, Sonora.

They say he was stopped at the Douglas port of entry for inspection of his
sedan.

CBP officers used a narcotics canine who alerted them to the presence of drugs.

Officers then conducted a thorough inspection and say they found 114 packages
of marijuana throughout the vehicle and in the spare tire.

The marijuana weighed more than 108 pounds and is worth an estimated $91,0.

Authorities say Acosta-Alvarado was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. They didn’t immediately know
Monday if he had a lawyer yet.
