Prescott mulls naming crosswalk after Sam Steiger

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The Prescott City Council will consider a proposal
Tuesday to name a crosswalk on the city’s famed Whiskey Row after the late U.S.
Rep Sam Steiger.

The Daily Courier reported that the proposal is meant to
commemorate Steiger’s famed repainting of the crosswalk in May 1986 after the
Arizona Department of Transportation had removed it.

The state’s transportation department had decided in April 1986 not to replace
the crosswalk after repaving the street.

Steiger faced criminal-damage charges for his part in the repainting, but was
later acquitted by a jury.

Steiger died in late September.

He served five terms as a congressman in the 1960s and 1970s, two terms in the
Arizona Senate in the early 1960s and won a two-year term as Prescott’s mayor in
