Woman gets jail, probation in fatal Tucson crash

TUCSON, Ariz. — A woman has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and five
years’ probation in a hit-and-run accident that killed a Tucson teenager.

Pima County prosecutors say 28-year-old Maria Elena Gomez also was sentenced
Monday to 300 hours of community service.

She was facing up to nearly nine years in prison.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Gomez was
indicted on one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and pleaded
guilty to the charge.

Authorities say 13-year-old Anthony J. Gillette ran away from a group home and
was struck by a SUV on Interstate 19 on Sept. 5, 2010.

Investigators later matched pieces of the SUV found at the crash scene to a
vehicle found at a home and that led to Gomez’s arrest.
