A gift to the Mesa Police Department will make it easier to take a bite out of crime.
Sandwich chain Firehouse Subs’ public safety foundation donated a specially trained Belgian Shepherd named Kira to the department.
Kira spent time training in both Austria and Holland before making her way to the United States.
“It’s not an uncommon path for police dogs nowadays,” said department spokesman Steve Berry.
The 2 1/2-year-old dog is estimated to be worth $10,000 and will be part of the department’s narcotics unit.
Berry said Mesa police have 12 dogs on the force that perform an array of tasks, from patrolling to bomb detection.
