MESA, Ariz. — The American Cancer Society gets a special gift from a group of very talented ladies. Members of the Caps for the Cure Knitting Group knit 1,000 caps for cancer patients.
“We’re all out to do one thing, to help out and that’s what’s wonderful,” said Marge Callus, one of the members.
The group meets every other Monday at the Humana Guidance Center. Humana provides all of the materials necessary for the projects.
“When we do gather a lot of us very seldom finish a project because we’re busing yaking,” Callus admitted, “but everybody goes home with their yarn and … some come back with 10 hats.”
The gesture will have a significant impact for the cancer patients who receive the gift.
“They’re overwhelmed by just the fact they’re able to put something on their head,” said Rose Olivares, quality of life manager for Cancer Resource Centers in the East Valley.
“A lot of people don’t realize that as women we are attached to our hair. When we lose it, it becomes too overwhelming for us to handle, so we need something to help us.
“Whether it be caps, whether it be a wig, something to go on their head to get that normalcy back,” Olivares said.
