A local bike shop stepped up Wednesday to help the victim of a violent crime.
After hearing about the James Segall’s encounter with a violent suspect, the owner of The Bike Barn in Phoenix presented Segall with a brand-new bike because “it was the right thing to do.”
“I didn’t really expect anything like this,” said Segall. “I’m touched by this great gesture.”
Phoenix Police reported after midnight on Sept. 22, Segall was seated on a bench in the area of Eighth St. and Northern. He was taking a break, as he pedals nearly 15 miles each way, to and from work.
“I was resting for a few minutes, got some water to drink then someone kind of came out of nowhere and pointed [a gun] at me,” he said.
Segall said he waited for a moment when the suspect was distracted and he went for the gun. The pair fought violently, Segall was hurt and the suspect took off with his property. Segall was left with vicious bite marks on his arms and legs, ripped skin on his knees and other injuries. He was also left without a way to make a living.
“It was my only means of transportation to work,” said Segall.
Until Wednesday, that is. Segall got a little choked up as he was given his new bike, but beamed over the generous gift.
“I never expected anyone to do anything this nice for me,” he said.
