PHOENIX — Valley fans of the popular contemporary Christian band The Newsboys could wind up in a movie.
The band will be filming scenes for an upcoming faith-based film “God’s Not Dead 2” during their concert this Sunday night at Grand Canyon University arena.
Newsboys drummer Duncan Phillips said the filming will begin before the show but will continue throughout.
“They’ll shoot some close-up stuff prior, for sure,” he said. “But then, to get those big arena shots, we will be shooting shots of the actual show itself.”
Phillips said he thinks the concert and the filming will be a lot of fun, not only for the concertgoers but for themselves as well.
“People can come along and, especially if they are up front toward the stage, there’s a real good chance that they’ll be in the movie,” he said. “So that’s fun.”
The Newsboys will be singing a new song for the movie during the concert.
They also appeared in the first “God’s Not Dead” movie, which starred Kevin Scerbo as a college professor who challenged a student to prove that God exists, grossed nearly $60 million at the box office.
Phillips said the movie’s sequel, which stars Melissa Joan Hart as a teacher who faces legal trouble after she talks about Jesus in a public school, will take a similar story in a different environment.
“God’s Not Dead 2 takes a very similar story from the classroom into the courtroom,” he said. “It actually gets to the Supreme Court.”
The movie, which is scheduled to open in April, is very timely, Phillips said..
“It’s very exciting and very poignant for what is happening in our crazy, crazy world right now. I can’t wait for it to come out and stir the pot,” he said.
