ASU’s downtown campus hits record enrollment

PHOENIX — Over 10,000 students are enrolled at Arizona State University’s downtown campus, setting a record.
“The enrollment continues to grow each year,” said Kent Hopkins, ASU’s provost for enrollment management. “Last year, we were around 9,400 students, so we are up 600 for this fall semester.”
Hopkins expects growth to continue as ASU expands its downtown campus offerings — Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College is offering undergraduate and graduate programs there.
Hopkins said one way that ASU is responding to student needs is by adding 75,000 square feet of recreation space to the downtown YMCA. The decision to proceed with the expansion was the result of a student referendum.
An old post office on Central Avenue near Fillmore Street is being turned into a student union. There are also plans to move the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law from Tempe to downtown Phoenix at some point.
