Arizona files suit over high prescription drug prices

Sep 19, 2012, 5:12 PM | Updated: 5:26 pm

The state of Arizona has sued the country’s largest drug wholesaler, accusing it of unduly inflating prices.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said McKesson Corporation was charging more than necessary for druge like Allegra, Lipitor, Prevacid and Valium being sold in Arizona.

“These were retailers such as Alberston’s, Costco, Safeway, Target, Walmart and Walgreens,” he said. “We’re alleging that there was a conspiracy between McKesson and these retailers that I mentioned.”

Horne said only McKesson is being sued and he does not anticipate further legal action against the retailers.

The company will be give the option to settle, but if they choose not to the case could proceed to trial.

The suit is seeking penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation, meaning the penalties in the suit could hit millions of dollars.
