Women at Mesa church turn Bible into work of art

MESA, Ariz. — Lee Kitts is a self-taught artist who is into medieval art.

“I fell in love with the illuminations and this kind of art by doing scrolls and stuff for the Society of Creative Anachronism,” Kitts said.

That’s a group that re-creates the art of 17th century Europe. Kitts is a parishioner at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mesa, where she leads a group of women in creating something beautiful.

“Exactly what we’re doing is creating a Bible,” Kitts said.

Each Wednesday night, the group painstakingly paints and writea in calligraphy the Book of Genesis. They’re drawing pages that reflect their interpretation of the Bible. The goal is to complete Genesis in about a year, then work on the rest of the Bible. But it’s going to take time.

“I think each section of the Bible is going to take at least a year,” Kitts said, “unless we get more people, which I hope we really do.”

It’s going to take thousands of dollars to complete, especially because the paper the group is using costs about $5 a sheet.

The church is holding a fundraiser for the project Oct. 27. Kitts hopes the church will one day publish the finished work.
