PHOENIX — An Australian man found dead at the Grand Canyon may have been killed by a lightning strike, officials said.
The National Park Service said it was notified Sunday afternoon of a man, later identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Crowden of Alfredton, Australia, may have been hit by lightning along the South Kaibab Trail.
Paramedics found Crowden’s body near Ooh-Aah Point, about one mile from the trailhead.
The Park Service is working with the Coconino County Medical Examiner to determine if Crowden was in fact killed by lightning.
Lightning strikes can happen as far as 10 miles from a storm, the Park Service said.
