Stanley Cup to stop in Scottsdale for short visit

Aug 29, 2012, 7:11 AM | Updated: 7:11 am

SCOTTSDALE — It certainly wasn’t how Coyotes fans wanted it to happen, but the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup is coming to the Valley.

Los Angeles Kings trainer Denver Wilson, son of longtime Coyotes equipment manager Stan Wilson, gets to spend Wednesday with the championship trophy as it is passed among the players, coaches and staff on its global tour.

Wilson is bringing the Cup to Scottsdale’s Ice Den to fulfill a promise to his former employer, said Mike O’Hearn, who runs the facility.

” ‘If this were to ever happen Mike, my dream would be to bring it to the Ice Den,'” said O’Hearn, recalling what Denver Wilson told him years ago.

” ‘I worked there with the team and you guys for a long time.’ And he wants to do it on behalf of youth hockey around the Valley because growth has been expedited by the Coyotes.”

O’Hearn said Denver Wilson spent many years at the Ice Den.

“We were fortunate to have Denver work in our pro shop, Coyotes Ice Sports, for many years. Wonderful young guy,” he said.

The public is invited to see the Stanley Cup at the Ice Den near Bell Road and Loop 101 beginning at 5 p.m.

We want to hear from you.
