Diamondbacks, United Way team up to end hunger

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are part of an effort to get food to the needy.
The D-backs and the United Way are asking fans to take a pledge to end chronic hunger in Maricopa County.
The Valley of the Sun United Way’s Merl Waschler said 82,000 families in the Valley are hungry right now.
“We think by 2016, we can cut the number by one third,” Waschler said. “We know we can only do it by community awareness and a broad-based partnership.”
And the Diamondbacks are providing that partnership.
“For every pledge taken through Valley of the Sun United Way that you pledge to be a part of this Unite to End Hunger in Maricopa County, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will give $1 for every pledge (up to $100,000 dollars),” Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said. “We’re proud to do that.”
The campaign will feature Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill, who is passionate about the cause.
“Kids should not have to go hungry,” said Hill. “It’ll be fun to see how far we can go with this thing.”
