An inspection of tourist buses in the Grand Canyon last week turned up major safety violations.
Bart Graves with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said 28 vehicles carrying passengers were placed out of service.
“Mostly mechanical violations, but the most significant violations were brakes, bad tires, exhaust leaks, stop lamps not working, turn signals, battery corrosion,” he said.
Graves said the yearly inspection also found seven drivers who should not have been behind the wheel.
“False record keeping of on-duty status, suspended driver’s license, not wearing corrective lenses when required, so we had a number of violations,” he said.
Graves said one driver was arrested for unpaid violations.
The tour companies had to send other buses to pick up some passengers.
