A national publication has honored a Scottsdale woman for her efforts to stop bullying.
Glamour magazine’s goal was to recognize women for their “inspirational accomplishments” and Carrie Severson’s story caught their eye.
“My mom told them that I told them that I took my savings account and cashed in my 401(k) and launched a non-profit two weeks after I was laid off of my job in June 2011,” said Severson.
Severson, who founded Severson Sisters was one of four women featured in the magazine for winning the Best of You contest, sponsored by Glamour and the cosmetic company, Sally Hanson.
Severson said instead of going back to work, she decided to pursue what she was “put on earth to do.”
As a young girl, Severson was bullied so severely for being overweight that she had to bribe the toughest girl in school to prevent physical violence. Severson and her sister created the foundation in hopes something beautiful will come from a dark point in her life.
Severson hopes that, through her story and efforts, young girls will feel beautiful and empowered. Severson said the best part of the entire experience is bringing attention to the bullying issue and that people will become aware that there are organizations out there who are willing to help.
Glamour awarded Severson and three other women with a trip to New York City, $1,000 for their foundation, make-overs and a photo shoot.
Recalling the call from Glamour back in June, “I called my mom, screamed and I cried a little bit,” said Severson.
Severson’s mom and about ten other people wrote to the magazine to nominate her.
Victoria Beckham personally signed the cover of the September 2012 Glamour magazine for Carrie Severson. A little something extra that makes the woman beam.
