Chandler Police arrested a registered sex offender on assault charges, after a boy told his mother the man had cornered and put hands on him in a restaurant restroom.
The boy’s mother told police that a man, later identified as John Isabel Chavez, 22, of Mesa, accosted the 11-year-old boy Sunday night in the men’s restroom. The boy said Chavez rubbed his shoulders, told the child he would be at his home later and blocked the door when the child tried to leave the bathroom.
The boy managed to get out and told his mother. Chavez left the restaurant.
Chandler police found Chavez after his truck was involved in a nearby single-car accident. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to a local hospital. After treatment he was booked on counts of assault, disorderly conduct, unlawful imprisonment, DUI and DUI with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or above.
Chavez was convicted of child molestation in 2010.
