The Arizona Department of Public Safety has informed its officers to be extra aware of seat-belt citations over the next three months, the agency said in a press release.
The new enforcement program, known as the 2012 Seat Belt Challenge, came about because of the high rate of fatal collisions in July — 25 in all — and the 15 people who died because they were not safely buckled in.
The voluntary program encourages officers to focus on the secondary seat-belt law, not just the reason for the traffic stop.
DPS said that about 83 percent of Arizona drivers regularly use seat belts.
