For some, working in the heat is part of the job

PHOENIX – As you head into the air conditioned office, many Valley workers are going to be sweating it out on the job.
“You just do it,” said Sean Spurling. “It’s what we do. It’s what we do to pay the bills.”
Spurling, who works at Los Olivas Car Wash at 3rd Street and McDowell, is no stranger to brutal heat.
“The guys we have here are loyal and they bust their butts,” he said.
The workers at the car wash clean more than 200 cars each day and there’s no slowing down just because temperatures exceed 100 degrees.
“We try to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade as much as possible,” said Spurling.
Rick, a construction worker who declined to give his last name, said he arrives at the site at 5:00 a.m. and works until he can’t stand the heat.
“It does seem like it’s getting hotter but it’s what you do to make a living,” he said. “It’ll cool down in a couple of months.”
