US Airways will retain its hub in Phoenix even if the airline reaches a merger agreement with American Airlines, a press release said.
There was concern that a potential merger between the two airline giants would cause US Airways to close up shop in the Valley, possibly leaving a gaping hole at Phoenix Sky Harbor. However, US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker told Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton that the airline would be staying put.
“US Airways isn’t just a name in Phoenix; it is part of our city through jobs, our economy and our everyday travel,” Stanton said in the release. “Phoenix and Tempe are currently home to US Airways, and we were glad to be reassured that US Airways remains committed to the Phoenix metro area.”
Further discussions included talk of the Valley being a destination for new jobs, should the merger take place. The possible addition of the American Airlines fleet and route network could add additional travelers that pass through Phoenix.
US Airways currently operates 265 flights per day from Sky Harbor and employs about 9,000 people in the Valley.
“It’s more than just about Tempe,” said Mitchell. “This is more of a regional issue. It’s critical that we have an open dialogue about the future because it greatly impacts the Valley.”
