Police searching for alleged officer impersonator

Aug 2, 2012, 3:03 PM | Updated: 3:03 pm

Police are searching for a man who allegedly made a traffic stop while impersonating a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The female victim was driving eastbound on Grand Ave. on July 13 about 8:00 a.m. when she saw read and blue flashing lights in her rear view mirror. Believing she was being stopped by police, she drove until she found a safe place to pull over.

After stopping safely, the suspect exited his 1990s model vehicle and approached the victim’s car. He then identified himself as an MCSO deputy, scolded the victim for poor driving and ordered her out of the vehicle. She was then asked for identification and handcuffed while the suspect performed a “background check.”

The suspect returned and told the victim she was receiving a “warning” and that she had warrants for her arrest. The suspect then released the victim. Shortly after, the victim notified police of the suspicious stop.

The suspect was last seen wearing a tan polo shirt and khaki pants. He did not have any sort of identification, as required by law enforcement, nor any sort of visible weapon.

The suspect is described as being a white male in his mid-40s, standing about 5-foot-11 and weighing about 220 pounds. He had short brown hair and a thick mustache.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.

We want to hear from you.
