Sweet! Ice cream trucks could return to Scottsdale

PHOENIX — Scottsdale has outlawed ice cream trucks and other street
vendors since the 1970s over concerns about drug deals and illegal activities.

Now the city is thinking about allowing mobile ice cream sales.

Officials are accepting public comments on the proposal at two open houses Tuesday evening.

The Arizona Republic reported that Scottsdale is one of
a few cities in the area that prohibits ice cream trucks along public roadways.

Some residents are concerned that rescinding the ban would increase crime and
safety issues involving children.

Others would welcome it, saying ice cream trucks bring back fond memories of
childhood. The proposal wouldn’t allow the trademark jingles.

J.P. Twist is chief of staff to Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane. He said the city
would issue about 10 licenses.
