Hybrid program catching attention at Chandler school

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A hybrid program at a new Chandler school could
offer
the perfect fit for a child’s educational needs.

“I’d love to see it catch on,” said Principal Leo Schlueter of John and Carol
Carlson Elementary School. He said children and parents will benefit from
the dual-program curriculum.

The $12.4 million dollar school, paid by voter-approved bond funds, offers
families a classic or a traditional program.

“I’m going to meet the needs of your son who is operating at a fifth-grade
level while in the third grade. Your daughter, who might struggle in reading
and math a little, I have a program for her too,” said Schlueter, describing the advantages of having two programs at one school.

The classic program typically offers grade-level education unless a child
needs extra help or a child can be pushed a little. The traditional
program offers advanced math and reading, more direct teacher instruction
and more homework.

The school is modeled after the Charlotte Patterson Elementary School, the
only other school in the district that offers both programs.

Carlson Elementary
