A small city outside Apache Junction will now have a better response time when it comes to emergency calls.
A new fire station opened up in Gold Canyon over the weekend.
Apache Junction Fire Deputy Chief Dave Montgomery said about 20,000 residents will benefit from the new station.
“When you get calls to the backside of the remote areas of Gold Canyon, we have extended response times, so this station, which is in that remote area, will have a significant impact on those long response times,” he said.
Montgomery said the station was funded by property taxes paid in Pinal County.
“This has been a project that has been many years in the making,” he said. “In 2006, voters passed a bond that allowed us to build this fire station.”
Montgomery said the station is the second in Gold Canyon and the fifth in Apache Junction.
Prior to the new station, the closest fire station was on the U.S. 60, far from the outskirts of Gold Canyon.
