Humidity can take toll on air conditioner

PHOENIX — Monsoon rains are great for dropping temperatures overnight, but their high humidity can cause big problems with air-conditioning units.
Rain causes the dew point to spike, creating more condensation.
“It’s just like setting out a fresh can of Coke on the counter and it sweats,” said Erik Bryan, owner of Precision Air and Heating in Mesa. “Your AC does the same thing.”
All of that moisture — in the air and unit — means it’s critical the air conditioner is flushing properly.
“Homeowners want to be very cautious that the drain lines outside their home are draining water and that the system is operating as it should,” Bryan said.
“If it’s not draining then water can pan in your attic and cause some problems.”
Despite record-high temperatures, Bryan said it’s been a typical summer for service for him. Busy, but that’s normal for mid-July in the desert.
