PHOENIX — The Phoenix Art Museum is planning on welcoming in a brand-new Spanish art exhibit the only way you can: With a giant fiesta.
The recent addition of a “Masterworks of Spanish Colonial Art” collection will be welcomed in with a giant party, Vanessa Davidson, Shawn and Joe Lampe Curator of Latin American Art, said.
“We’re transforming the Museum’s great hall into a Cumbia dance party,” she said. “We’re going to have a live band called La Diabla, which is one of the best known Cumbia bands. Even more exciting than that are the DJs that will be here. Los Hijackers will be really wonderful to hear.”
The opening will take place during one of Phoenix’s First Friday nights, so visitors will get free admission from 6 to 10 p.m. Davidson said that the display includes some of the most extraordinary paintings from colonial Latin America, such as “The Last Judgment” by Michelangelo.
“(The Last Judgement) is 18th century from the vice royalty of Peru, and it depicts the Last Judgment, with God the Father, the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, and the archangel Michael conquering Satan,” she said.
Another featured painting is an 18th century painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe. “The Virgin of Guadalupe is considered the Queen of the Americas,” Davidson said. “She plays a very prominent role in Latin American religiosity.”
The exhibit will be open to the public starting on Saturday and will be in Phoenix until February. Phoenix Art Museum also offers free admission on Wednesday evenings.
