As of Friday morning there’s a new sheriff in the polygamist community of Colorado City in northwestern Arizona.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has stationed deputies in the community. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said the Colorado City marshals operate under the thumb of jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and moving sheriff’s officers into the community will help many young men and women.
Horne tapped more than $400,000 from a special fund to place Mohave County deputies in Colorado City.
Warren Jeffs is serving a life prison sentence in Texas for child sexual assault stemming from his marriages to two young female followers.
Jeffs won’t be eligible for parole until he is at least 100, but Horne said the Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints leader is calling the shots for the Colorado City marshals from his cell.
“If they [marshals] are not enforcing the law and favoring people that belong to the FLDS religion there’s going to be a Sheriff’s deputy there to make sure the laws are enforced objectively and not according to religion.”
