Tuesday was a holiday of sorts for Arizona hunters: Dove season officially began.
The opening of dove season — Sept. 1-15 and Nov. 26-Jan. 9 — draws both locals and out-of-towners to the Valley’s outskirt’s to hunt the birds.
Mike Russell, host of KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Get Outdoors, joined 12 News to mark the day. He and a camera crew were in Buckeye before 5 a.m. ready to hunt.
“Their schedule is a lot like ours,” Russell said. “They wake up. They want to have a drink. They’ll look for food, and then they’ll look for shade.”
Sunrise and sunset are the best times to find the birds. Hunting grounds are restricted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. A $57 license and $5 dove stamp are required.
