PHOENIX — Arizona prison officials said an inmate serving a 21-month
sentence for resisting arrest was found dead from an apparent suicide.
The Arizona Republic reported that the death of
Nelson Johnson, 31, marked the fifth acknowledged suicide in the state
prison system since Jan. 1.
Johnson was found dead in his cell Sunday at the prison in Florence.
At the time of his death, Johnson was being held in maximum security in a unit that
includes mental-health and disciplinary detention cells.
Officials couldn’t immediately confirm that Johnson was being held in
isolation, but all the cells in that unit are isolation cells.
All but one of the acknowledged suicides in the system this year have been by
inmates being held in isolation in maximum security at Florence or Eyman
prisons.
