The cleanup is continuing from the thunderstorm that slammed the Phoenix area Monday night. Insurance companies are seeing a lot of claims because of the storm.
“We see falling trees on homes and fences,” said John Candaso, an insurance agent for Triple-A Arizona. “We will hear about trees falling on cars and resulting water damage from things like roof damage and leaking roofs from storm damage.”
Candaso said that if you suffered any damage, you should contact your insurance company immediately and make sure that you document the damage.
“You definitely want to take photos or videos of the damage,” said Candaso.
He said to keep receipts of any supplies you buy or any repairs that you have done on your property, and before you file a claim, make sure you understand how much your deductible is.
“The deductible is going to be the amount of money that you’re going to be responsible for out of your pocket,” Candaso said. “Even though you’re covered in the claim, you’re going to be responsible for the deductible.”
Candaso said that even if you didn’t suffer any damage in Monday’s storm, you need to be aware that you could get hit by the next one. He said that there is something that you should have so that you are ready when you need to file a claim.
“You should always have an inventory of your valuable possessions. You should have a list of the purchase price and the approximate date that you purchased these items,” said Candaso. “These will definitely help in the claims process.”
