Arizona spends $3M on 1070 defense

PHOENIX — Arizona has spent almost $3 million defending a controversial
illegal immigration law for the last two years.

The Arizona Republic reported private donations have
helped fund the defense of the law, which the U.S. Supreme Court partially
upheld Monday.

The court, which struck down key provisions of the law, was unanimous in
allowing police to check the status of someone they suspect is not in the U.S.

Gov. Jan Brewer’s office has been paying outside attorneys with a legal-defense
fund that was set up after the law was enacted in 2010. That fund has garnered
$3.8 million in donations.

Seven groups originally filed lawsuits challenging Senate Bill 1070. Some of
them are likely to continue even with the ruling.
