Phoenix Zoo offering summer kids camp

If the kids need something to do, you might sign them up for camp at the Phoenix Zoo.

Dean Watanabe, the zoo’s School and Family Program supervisor, said there are two kinds of camps.

“During the summer, we run a summer camp for kids,” he said. “That’s a day camp that runs basically all of June and July. It’s for kids going into kindergarten all of the way through eighth grade.

“It’s an opportunity for kids to get behind the scenes and do a lot of cool things that you really don’t get to do as a normal zoo guest.”

Watanabe said another camp happens during the cooler part of the year.

“It’s an opportunity for the kids to come and spend the night at the zoo,” he said. “They get to wake up to lions roaring. They get to hike the zoo at night and again in the morning. It’s a way to experience the zoo in a totally different way.”
