PHOENIX — An 11-month-old girl is in the hospital in critical condition and her mother has been arrested on child-abuse charges.
Phoenix Police charged Maria A. Rivera on two counts of child abuse Tuesday night, after being called to a local hospital where staff told them the little girl had suffered injuries that were not consistent with the explanation given by Rivera.
Rivera eventually admitted to police during questioning that she had shaken the child, causing significant injuries. Rivera waited at least an hour before seeking medical attention for the girl.
The little girl’s siblings, a 1-month-old and a 2-year-old, were taken from the home at 34th and Willetta streets into custody by Child Protective Services.
