A 22-year-old suburban Phoenix woman is in jail after telling police she drowned her toddler twins in a bathtub.
Mireya Alejandra Lopez of Avondale was charged Sunday with the first-degree murders of her 2-year-old twin boys. The boys died in hospitals that afternoon. They had been pulled from their family’s bathtub in Avondale, according to the fire department.
Avondale Deputy Fire Chief Ron Deadman said the twins were found submerged in the tub and their mother was home at the time. They were pronounced dead at different hospitals.
In court papers, Lopez said no one loved her or her children. Her mother told police that she had to save another small child, whom Lopez was found holding underwater.
Lopez told police that the little boys were bullied and treated differently.
She also told police she suffered from manic depression, psychosis and schizophrenia. She takes regular medications and took them as prescribed the morning of the alleged drowning.
Lopez will also be charged with one count of attempted homicide.
