Study finds worst imaginable on hotel-room surfaces

Hotel rooms get cleaned every day, but a research study
found more than just ordinary bacteria around the room.

It found fecal matter.

Cara Christ with the Arizona Department of Health Services
said it may be because some surfaces aren’t cleaned daily.

“Places where you expect there would be a lot of touching
— things like light switches, remote controls — things
that may you not think about cleaning every day but people
use over and over and over again,” she said.

Christ said that it may be tough to fully eliminate
bacteria but that doesn’t mean hotel guests shouldn’t try.

“One of the things that we always caution people is that
germs are everywhere,” she said. “We always want people,
before you put anything, especially your hands or fingers
in your mouth, you’re always washing your hands.”

Christ said hotels should have a standard procedure of
cleaning all surfaces daily, but recommends users take the
extra step to make sure what they touch is clean.

The study was conducted by the University of Houston.
