PHOENIX (AP) — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a group of
16 illegal immigrants after stopping them from being smuggled to other parts
of the country.
The sheriff’s office says a 6-year-old girl found among the group was turned
over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while most of the adults
in the group were booked into jail.
The group was found in a van in northern metro Phoenix on Friday, and told
deputies that they were on their way to various parts of the country, including
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Kentucky, Kansas, Texas and California.
The 6-year-old told deputies that she was from El Salvador. It’s unclear where
her parents are and where she was headed.
