Tonto officials close area near Poco Fire

Jun 15, 2012, 2:29 PM | Updated: 2:33 pm

YOUNG, Ariz. — Officials said Friday crews have no containment around the Poco Fire, which
scorched approximately 1,000 acres overnight in the Tonto National Forest.

No structures are threatened, and no injuries have been reported, but forest officla have closed off a section of area.

The closure begins at the intersection of Forest roads 291 and 512, southerly along the eastern edge of FR 512 to the intersection with FR 200 (Chamberlin Trail). From there the closure goes northerly along the western edge of FR 200 to the intersection with FR 291, then easterly along the northern edge of FR 291 to FR 512.

Residence owners and lessees of land, and holders of Forest Service special-use authorizations within the restricted area may use the roads to get to and from their property.

The blaze, which is burning about 6 miles north of the town of Young in central Arizona, was first
reported Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, an ongoing drought and dry weather conditions have driven the fire
across the steep and rugged terrain.

The cause is still being under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Grand Fire outside of Grand Canyon National Park is 90 percent
contained after charring 480 acres.

The 257 Fire near Superior is now 75 percent contained at 2,860 acres.
