PHOENIX — A man who said his son’s death was a result of being abused by a
priest is suing the Diocese of Phoenix.
The Arizona Republic reported David Michael Pain Sr.
filed a wrongful death lawsuit, two years after he shot his son in self-defense.
Rev. John “Jack” Spaulding, who is accused of the abuse, and a bishop are also named in the suit.
Attorney Bedford Douglass Jr. said Friday the younger Pain had developed
post-traumatic stress disorder from being abused at the age of 13. Police said David Jr., 39, broke into his father’s Scottsdale home in June 2010 and
the elder Pain shot him in self-defense.
Spaulding’s attorney said his client denies ever sexually abusing Pain.
The lawsuit seeks damages for grief and distress.
