MESA, Ariz. — Forest officials in central Arizona said land scarred by a
wildfire is at an increased risk for flooding.
The Sunflower Fire south of Payson has burned more than 17,600 acres and is 80
percent contained.
The Tonto National Forest will be holding a volunteer event this Saturday and
Sunday as part of the rehabilitation effort.
Officials are seeking hundreds of volunteers to fill 25,000 sandbags and place
them in and around the burn area.
District Ranger Gary Hanna said the area holds cultural and historical
significance for many forest visitors.
