TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Crews are making progress on a wildfire near the Grand
Canyon.
The Grand Fire has scorched 480 acres and was 70 percent contained Thursday.
The fire is burning in one of the main corridors of the Kaibab National
Forest’s Tusayan Ranger District near a lookout tower. No structures are
threatened, and no injuries have been reported.
But hikers and campers are being advised to stay off a six-mile section of the
Arizona Trail because of hazards created by the wildfire.
Fire information spokeswoman Punky Moore says those include burned trees that
could fall over the trail.
Two other wildfires near Superior _ the 2,860-acre 257 Fire and the 200-acre
Comet Fire _ were 50 percent contained Thursday.
The Sunflower Fire south of Payson is 80 percent contained at more than 17,600
acres.
