Crews make progress on Superior blaze, battle Canyon fire

Jun 13, 2012, 1:09 PM | Updated: 1:10 pm

SUPERIOR, Ariz. — Firefighters were making progress
Wednesday against a
wildfire near Superior that has charred more than 2,600
acres.

Tonto National Forest spokeswoman Debbie Cress said the
fire, which started
Sunday in a wash, was not threatening any structures. It
was burning about 3
miles south of Superior in the Tonto National Forest
northwest of Phoenix.

Authorities said the cause is under investigation.

Cress said about 330 firefighters were laying lines to
stop the blaze from
moving north or eastward.

Elsewhere in the state, crews were maintaining a perimeter
around a 446-acre
forest fire outside Grand Canyon National Park. Fire
spokeswoman Punky Moore
said the blaze should not deter visitors to the park. Containment is at 50 percent.

People hiking or driving in the Grand Canyon will likely
see smoke from the
fire, which is about 11 miles southeast of Grand Canyon
Village, Moore said. The public is asked to avoid the fire area around Grandview Lookout Tower.

Moore said the blaze was reported Tuesday and that crews
will spend the day
reinforcing containment lines. Its cause remained under
investigation.
