Navajos seek voice in Arizona redistricting case

PHOENIX — The Navajo Nation is asking for permission to be part of a
federal court case in which Republicans are challenging Arizona’s new map of
legislative districts.

The tribe said it wants to make sure that any changes resulting from the case
don’t make it harder for Native Americans to elect candidates of their choice.

The tribe’s motion to intervene said it is particularly concerned about new
Legislative District 7 in eastern Arizona.

Native Americans account for two-thirds of the district’s population and nearly
64 percent of its voting-age population.

Any changes resulting from the court case would only apply after this year’s
elections.
