CROWN KING, Ariz. — Fire crews are close to fully containing a wildfire
that had forced the evacuation of a historic mining town.
The Gladiator Fire near Crown King was 90 percent contained Friday. Fewer than
two dozen people were mopping up hot spots on the 16,240-acre blaze that
sparked May 13.
Investigators haven’t determined what caused the blaze at the Prescott National
Forest, but they’ve ruled out suspicious activity and natural causes.
The blaze forced the evacuation of Crown King and other communities to the north.
The fire danger remains high in the area. The forest banned the use of
campfires and charcoal grills on Friday, even in developed areas.
