Bisbee mining project forces 13 residents to move

BISBEE, Ariz. — The decision by Phoenix-based mining firm Freeport-McMoRan
to resume a reclamation project means more than a dozen Bisbee residents will
have to move.
The Sierra Vista Herald reported the mining company owns
the land which 13 residents have been leasing for their houses.
Freeport-McMoRan spokesman Eric Kinneberg said Tuesday that work on the project will
require tenants to permanently relocate. Kinneberg said the company is providing assistance with the transition.
Officials have set up a relocation program to help tenants through the fall,
giving them time to find a new place to live.
Bisbee resident Donald Smiley said residents knew this day would come. The
71-year-old said it will be difficult emotionally to leave.
