Tucson child-abuse case goes back to grand jury

TUCSON, Ariz. — Prosecutors who obtained an indictment against the
grandmother of a 1-year-old girl who was starved to death must make their case
before a grand jury again.
The Arizona Daily Star reports a Pima County Superior
Court judge ruled Tuesday prosecutors are to give a new presentation on the role
Clara Huyghue, 53, played in Za’Naya Flores’ care.
A defense attorney for Huyghue argued prosecutors unfairly depicted his client
as Za’Naya’s primary caregiver despite the fact she was working more than 80
hours a week as a nurse.
The girl’s mother and aunt also face charges. All three are scheduled to appear
in court June 25.
Authorities said Za’Naya weighed less than 15 pounds when she was rushed to a
hospital after going into cardiac arrest on Jan. 12.
