PHOENIX — Critics of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will hold a rally
on June 23 to call for the closure of his complex of canvas jail tents.
B. Loewe, a spokesman for organizers of the rally, said more than 1,000 people
were expected to attend the protest over conditions in Arpaio’s “Tent City.”
Early in his tenure as sheriff, Arpaio won points with voters for housing
inmates in tents during Phoenix’s triple-digit summer heat.
Critics said conditions in the jail tents are inhumane.
Arpaio has said he doesn’t see any problems with housing inmates in tents and
is fond of pointing out that members of the U.S. military live in tents.
