Arizona woman gets 17-years in child abuse case

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The custodial mother of a 2-year-old boy found dead two
years ago at a northern Arizona campground has been sentenced to 17 years in
prison.
Christina Priem of Flagstaff pleaded guilty in May to two counts of child abuse
in an agreement with prosecutors. She was sentenced Monday.
The skeletal remains of Sylar Newton were found in a wash in August 2010, weeks
after he was reported missing from the campsite near Rimrock. Authorities said
witnesses told them the boy appeared to be under the influence of drugs or
medication. No one was charged with his death.
Priem had faced more than 32 years in prison. Her 17-year sentence will be
followed by supervised probation.
Priem’s mother, Nancy Collins, was also sentenced Monday in the case, receiving
supervised probation. Collins had pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse.
