FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A man has been arrested for allegedly starting a fire
in a northern Arizona forest by walking away from a campfire and violating
federal restrictions.
Federal prosecutors said Friday that 49-year-old Stacy A. Postel remains in
custody pending trial.
U.S. Forest Service police arrested Postel on May 22 after a four-acre wildfire
was extinguished on the Kaibab National Forest near the town of Parks.
Authorities determined the fire was caused by an abandoned campfire that wasn’t
properly extinguished.
Witnesses told police about a man with a large bedroll and backpack walking
away from the fire and that led them to Postel, whose last known address is in
Burbank, Calif.
He’s been charged with five misdemeanors, each carrying a maximum penalty of
six months in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.
